It’s been a few weeks since we have heard from Sheriff Jeff Wood with his weekly updates for the community, this can only mean one thing, he’s been very busy.  On his way to make another appearance at the State Capital with the Sheriff’s Association he stopped by the KOAL 103.9 FM News room to give a quick update.

“Congressman Chaffetz is in town and all the Utah Sheriffs are going to meet with him to discuss a few things, he is trying to pass a bill on solitary confinement in the jails to eliminate that and we want to explain to him the purpose we have for that; there are times that‘s a safety issue for the person that’s confined as well as everyone he’s housed with or she’s housed with,” stated Wood. The Sheriff’s Association has been very involved in the issues that they as an organization stand for and have made it a priority to be involved with the legislative process.

Last week Wood attended the Western States Sheriff’s Association Conference in Reno. This was an opportunity to meet several Sheriffs from other states to discuss issues that they face in their regions and how they may resolve them. “It was a great opportunity to link up with some Sheriffs from other states and see how they do things, I was happy to be able to go,” said Wood. Whether the department was big or small each Sheriff in attendance at the conference could agree that drugs are a huge problem no matter the area they preside in.

Hunters in the Carbon County area will now be able to partake in night hunting. The ordinance has been passed and will allow hunters to hunt coyotes, red fox, raccoons and skunks at night. Wood added, “When you come down to the Sheriff’s office you’ll fill out your application and I’ll give you a map that shows exactly what is open and closed so people know where to be.” The permits will be issued by the Sheriff 25 at a time with an expiration of 30 days.

Wood attended a staff meeting with Adult Probation and Parole Monday Morning and was happy to hear that they would be working with the Boys and Girls Club with a food drive. “The collection boxes are at the Adult Probation and Parole office in Price and Castle Dale, so if anyone has anything they want to donate that’s a good cause, it’s a great little food drive that Boys and Girls Club and Department of Corrections are doing,” said Wood. Items needed range from pudding cups, granola bars, peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, crackers, pop tarts, oatmeal, graham crackers, just to name a few.

Next week Wood will talk about the do’s and don’ts of ATV safety with Spring in the air and Easter just right around the corner.
