The Emery Spartans wrapped up the region portion of the track and field season by registering six first place finishes at the league finale Tuesday afternoon in Moab.

Competing against five other schools from Region 15, the Emery boys squad finished second with 145 points, falling shy of Manti’s 195 point championship performance. San Juan, Grand, North Sevier and Gunnison rounded out the field.

The Lady Spartans accumulated just 94 points ending the meet in fourth place. North Sevier ran away with the meet scoring 173 points, followed by Manti and Grand. San Juan and Gunnison finished in a distant fifth and sixth place.

Senior Tyler Olsen led the way for the Spartans finishing first in both the long and high jump. Justin Jennings and Raymond Brazier finished second and third behind Olsen in the high jump, making the event the most productive for the Spartans at the region finale. Junior Ty Mecham also claimed the region crown in the shot put.

On the girl’s side of the track junior Erin Hurst finished first in the 3200 meters finishing with a time of 11:52.6. Fellow senior Bayler Griffin topped North Sevier’s Autumn Sorenson for first place in the 100 meters with a time of 13.01. Senior Paytn Jeffs also logged first place in the high jump.

The Emery boys team scored the majority of their points with depth scoring, including second place finishes from Ashton Dieli in the 300 meter hurdles, Logan Cox in the 400 meters, Chase Christiansen in the 1600 meters and Brazier in the javelin.

The team will now prepare for the season finale state championship meet next Friday and Saturday at Brigham Young University in Provo. Last week the team participated in the BYU Invitational competing against 2A and 1A schools throughout the state.
