The Carbon Lady Dinos extended their season by finishing 1-1 in the opening two rounds of the 3A state tournament, but will have to work their way through the one-loss bracket in order win a state title.

Starting the tournament off against the No. 2 seed from Region 10 in Stansbury, one poor inning doomed the Lady Dinos in a 6-3 loss. With the game locked at 0-0 in the third inning, Stansbury took the lead for good by scoring four runs. Carbon scored one run in the fourth and their final two in the seventh.

Kinley Nelson was tagged with the loss as she surrendered one of the two home runs hit by Stansbury. Kelsey Sorenson powered the offense finishing with two doubles and a single. Chandelle Nichols and Cali Fossat also recorded multiple hits as Carbon finished with nine as a team.

Faced with elimination the Lady Dinos responded in a major way as they blasted through Morgan 13-3 to keep their season alive. McKenna Sorenson delivered a dominating performance by earning the win on the mound, while also finishing with three hits and four RBI.

Alex Thayn helped push the offensive surge as she also recorded four RBI off of a home run and a double. Kelsey Sorenson laced three singles and Fossat finished with a double and a single.

The Lady Dinos will now return to the field on Thursday afternoon and play either Grantsville or Cedar City in an elimination game. After starting the tournament 1-1 Carbon has to win seven games in three days in order to win the state championship.
