Costly mistakes in the sixth inning of a highly competitive game led to the Carbon Dinos first loss of the 3A state tournament as they suffered a 12-6 setback to Pine View at Kearns High School Thursday afternoon.

Trailing 5-0 in the third inning, the Dinos used a huge run to chop the Pine View lead down to just two. The game remained 5-3 entering the sixth inning when key errors led to an inside the park home run for Pine View. Both teams scored three runs in the final inning, leading to the eventual loss for Carbon.

Cole Fossat picked up the loss on the hill as he gave up nine runs and recorded four strikeouts in just over five innings. Zac Bradley worked the final inning and a half in a relief effort.

With the game tipping in Pine View’s favor Carbon registered three singles as Mitch Olsen, Trey Richardson and Chase Morgan all reached safely. The three hits led to runs as Jayden Flemett and Anthony Maclean notched an RBI a piece.

Trailing 12-3 in the bottom of the seventh Fossat knocked a three-run home run, his third of the tournament. The blast brought Carbon within six, but that’s as close as they would get in the six run defeat.

Thursday’s loss sends Carbon to the one-loss bracket where they will face an elimination contest against the winner of the Dixie/Desert Hills game. That contest is scheduled to take place at 11:00 AM again at Kearns High School.
