The Carbon Dinos put the final touches on the track and field season as they traveled to Brigham Young University for the 3A state championships Friday and Saturday.

After an impressive 2016 regular season, the Carbon Lady Dinos finished 10th overall as they scored 18 points in the season finale. Cedar dominated the meet with an impressive 135 point performance, topping second place Desert Hills. Stansbury, Dixie and Richfield completed the top five.

The Carbon boys managed to score just four points as they finished 19th out of the 21 teams that competed. Desert Hills ran away with the meet scoring 127 points, nearly doubling up second place Juab. Cedar, Richfield and Logan rounded out the top five.

“I was really impressed with how the team came prepared,” said head coach Jimmy Jewkes. “Most of them got personal records in their events, which is really the overall goal. I think we achieved what we set out to do.”

Junior Sarah Ohlwiler led Carbon with fifth place finishes in the 100 meter hurdles and long jump. Ohlwiler also finished eighth in the 100 meters, scoring a total of nine points for the Lady Dinos. She entered the state meet the No. 1 seed in the high jump.

“She was phenomenal this year and I think she peaked a little bit earlier in the season,” Jewkes said of Ohlwiler. “She got to state and ran really well in the hurdles, and there was a lot of pressure on her in the long jump because she was the top seed coming in. It was a good learning curve for her to know what it’s like to go in as the top dog and to get beat.”

Senior Sara Morley managed to score seven points for the Lady Dinos, finishing fifth and sixth in the shot put and discus. Traditionally two events that Carbon has failed to score in, Jewkes believes it is a sign of things to come as the team continues to evolve.

“It was the first time since I’ve been the coach that we have been able to place girls in each of the throwing events,” said Jewkes. “Sarah Morley was great in the shot put and the discus, and then our little freshman Caitlyn Dimick made finals in the javelin, so that was a new development.”

The medley relay team consisting of Ohlwiler, Jordyn Oman, Madelyn Christensen, Lindsey Blanc, Sadie Crompton and Emily Broadbear also scored two points. The team finished seventh overall with a time of 4:29.70.

Gabe Vandyke was the lone participant on the boy’s side of the track to register a top eight finish. After running a personal best at the BYU Invitational in early May, Vandyke finished fifth in the 300 meter hurdles, completing the race in 41.57.

“Gabe found a passion for the hurdles and he went after it,” Jewkes said of his senior. “He’s not just a good on the track, but he is a good kid in the classroom. I look forward to him doing a lot of things in life outside of athletics that will be really impressive.”
