The Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood stopped by for his weekly update. This is where he keeps the community informed on issues happening in the area. His emphasis this week was on high school graduation celebrations, summer patrol and the Search and Rescue Demolition Derby.

Carbon High School will be graduating their class of 2016 on Friday, May 27 and Wood had some words of wisdom for the entire class, “Graduation night is a time to celebrate your accomplishments, you’ve been in school for a long time, you’ve accomplished a lot of great things but it’s not a free pass to go hog wild. Be responsible and keep in mind decisions you make at this point in your life could affect the rest of your life.” Seniors and other high school students are urge to attend the Graduation Spectacular for a safe way to celebrate.

With high school graduation also comes the end of another school year for many children in the area, most of them will be outside enjoying their summer break over the next few months. “Summer is a crap shoot, you know you’ll have kids out on skateboards and bicycles and playing ball, here and there and everywhere. Just be alert and aware that when you are in the neighborhoods kids are around,” said Wood. Parents are also urged to speak with their children about pedestrian safety.

Now that the students and children in the area are taken care of, adults are also encouraged to be responsible when out enjoying the summer months whether they are out camping, fishing or hosting a neighborhood BBQ. “Summer for the Sheriff’s office we have our federally funded DUI Shifts that will be out doing DUI patrols. You’ll see extra deputy sheriffs now for the next few months out and about,” stated Wood. Citizens are encouraged to approach and interact with any of the deputies when you see them out this summer.

Finally, there is still time to take advantage of the free registration fee deadline of June 1 for the Carbon County Search and Rescue Demolition Derby. “Go to Tire King talk to Elsie that’s where the registration paperwork is she has a board there; you can see how many cars are registered. With the 80s and newer class, the chain and bang its cheap to build a car. That’s the biggest class we have right now, there are more cars being built in that class than any of the other three. So that is the big money class, we have over $15,000 in pay-outs that we are going to pay this year and it will be based on the biggest class gets the most money,” said Wood. This is sure to be the biggest derby Carbon County has seen in years due to the fact that it will be held in conjunction with the Carbon County Fair.
