The Carbon County Search and Rescue Demolition Derby committee has extended the free registration deadline, now drivers have till the end of June to get signed up so that they may be a part of this year’s spectacular show. The derby will be held in conjunction with the annual Carbon County Fair on Saturday, August 13.

Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood said, “We had an opportunity to do it with the Carbon County Fair which is a win, win for all of us. It gives a good event for the fair and it gives us an opportunity to participate in the fair, so we can kind of combine events and not compete. So we wanted to do that and it’s going to be August 13 is when the Derby will be this year and I’m really looking forward to it. If anyone is interested in building a car for that, I’ve mailed out rules to the past drivers I could identify but I didn’t have all of them; but there are rules at Tire King we also have them on our Facebook page.” Drivers may visit Tire King located at 535 East Main Street in Price to register.

Organizers have added a few different classes to the event in order to get more drivers to participate in the derby. “We added four classes, so in the past they’ve been the traditional or stern and dirt rules for the old iron, they call it, so the older cars and the trucks that will stay the same. But we have added two new classes that are more affordable, you can build the cars pretty cheap, they are chain and bang, 80s or new class for cars and minis. So if anyone has a mini that they want to bring into the derby we’ll have that. There may be, there is talk of some other Sheriffs building cars and having a Sheriffs heat. I don’t know if we’re going to make that happen for sure or not it just depends on how many Sheriffs build cars,” stated Wood.

The annual derby is the only way the Carbon County Search and Rescue generates funds for operation so they are planning on having a great show this year and are excited for it to take place during the fair. Wood finished by saying, “I encourage everyone to get out there it’s going to be a good time. I’ll have a car out there; I want some people to bang in to out in the arena so my is going to be a full on cop car.”

The biggest class thus far is the 80s and newer class, the chain and bang. There are more cars being built in this class than any of the other three, so it’s likely that is the big money class when it comes to the $15,000 in pay-outs.
