Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood talked about the many events that were held over the past weekend and how his deputies contributed to both Pleasant Valley Days in Scofield and SEUPAs Energy Days in Price.

Pleasant Valley Days brought in a lot of campers, boaters and of course UTV/ATV enthusiasts from around the state.  “With summer we seem to be having a lot of ATV accidents and I just want to encourage everyone to wear your helmets. First that’s the easiest thing to put on and the easiest thing to forget about; but it will save you in an accident if you have your helmet on and in your UTVs wear your seatbelts, the most common cause of injuries in UTVs is people not wearing their seatbelts,” stated Wood.

Carbon County Search and Rescue volunteer Zack Wise, who happens to have an EMT background was at the command center in Scofield the entire weekend to help patrol and assist any in emergencies that arose. Wood said, “We had four in Carbon County on Saturday, one yesterday in Scofield and they had a fatal accident in Emery County this weekend on an ATV. So it seems like we had a lot of them. There is a lot of them up there and I get that, but we need to be careful and they are made to ride on the dirt. When you get on the asphalt they behave differently, I believe that we had one that was an asphalt accident.”

Other members of the Search and Rescue team volunteered to assist the contractor by taking them by boat to the little island in the reservoir to set up for the firework show. The show was delayed due to ATV/UTV accidents.

Because the Search and Rescue team is on a volunteer basis and the team relies on the annual Demolition Debry as their fundraiser each year. This year is sure to be one of the best derby shows in years as Wood explains, “There are 37 cars registered as of last week. Now the free registration for the cars ended June 30, however, you can register a car for the derby right up till the day of the derby, you just pay the fee, I believe its $25.00 a car.” Individuals who would like to register for the derby may do so at Tire King at 535 East Main Street.
