Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood has been very busy with preparing for International Days celebration, rearranging positions within the department and the Intake Building Open House.

A command post will be set up at Washington Park for this year’s International Days Celebration. The deputies will be out among community members making sure everyone is enjoying the celebration in a safe manner.

Deputy John Mangum who was on the road has accepted a position up north which opened his position. “Braydon Summarell has worked for us in the jail for the past few years. He’s actually moving to a position on the road now. We did a merit board and Braydon Summarell was the pick for the road so he is going there,” said Wood.

“We’ve hired Frankie Tapia to work in our jail now and we’re really excited about Frankie, he brings a lot of good things to the Sheriff’s Office, he’s involved in the community a lot.” Deputy Jeff Cowley will soon be retiring after years of service which will open up another position that will need to be filled.

The Sheriff’s Department will be hosting an Open House at the Intake Building which is located behind Gas n’ Go. Community members are invited to come take a look at the resources stored in that facility such as the command post, UTVs, ATV. The Open House will be held on Saturday, August 6 but the time has yet to be determined.

Wood addressed the Loretta M. Jones cold case, “Still wrapping up the cold case up, I hope to have some information on that in the next week so we’ll be able to speak about that I hope.” The murder took place in 1970 when Jones was in her home with her 4-year-old daughter present. The family agreed to have her body exhumed in June of this year to allow detectives to gather possible DNA evidence.

The summer time is slowly winding down and last minute road trips may be in store for families. “Something I wanted to mention is summertime we do a lot of traveling as families usually, make sure that everyone is buckling up. I saw that we had a lot of accidents over the weekend state wide and there were fatalities that possible could have been avoided through the use of seatbelts. So just want everyone to make sure they’re wearing their seatbelt and being safe out there,” stated Wood.

The Carbon County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Demolition Derby is still hosting registration. Interested individuals may sign up at Tire King located at 535 East Main Street. To date there are forty cars currently signed up for the competition that will take place on Saturday, August 13 in conjunction with the Carbon County Fair.
