Junior Ryker Smith shot a meet low 74 to lead the Carbon Dinos to a victory in the opening Region 12 golf competition Wednesday afternoon at Cove View in Richfield.

The Dinos finished with a 307 team score to defeat second place North Sanpete by 10 strokes. Richfield finished third with a 338, followed by Canyon View’s 348 and Juab’s 418.

“Richfield’s course sets up pretty decent for our kids,” said head coach Tom King. “The kids played well, I’d give them a B-plus rating. I was really proud of Carson Martines, as a sophomore he played his low round to date.”

Outside of Smith’s low the Dinos received a solid outing from fellow junior Ryan Gagon who fired a 77. Carson Martines and Joey Penovich both ended with a 78. Kayden Alderson shot a 79, and Brady Gagon finished with an 86. Only the top four scores are counted towards the team’s final total.

“The last couple of year’s 320 was our goal, which is an 80 shot average for four guys,” said King. “Now our goal is 300, or sub-300. These top five kids can shoot 75 or under easy at any golf course they go too.”

The victory in the first meet gives Carbon a 10 stroke lead heading into the second week of region play, which takes place on Aug. 25 at Soldier Hollow in Sterling. The second meet location will also host this year’s state championship tournament in October.

1- Carbon: 307
2- North Sanpete: 317
3- Richfield: 338
