The Emery Spartans rebounded from a tough opening week to finish second in Wednesday’s Region 15 meet at Soldier Hollow in Sterling.

As a team Emery finished with a 372, ending 36 strokes back of first place Grand. San Juan came in third with a 383, followed by Manti, Gunnison and North Sevier.

McKoy Holt fired an 87 to record the team’s low score for the day. Oakley Toomer finished with a 90, Race Nielson 91 and Logan Healey 104. Shaidyn Killpack and Deryk Fuller shot a 106 and 107, falling out of the team’s top four.

Wednesday’s second place performance comes after the team opened the season with a third place finish at Palisades last week. Ending with a team score of 386, Emery finished 31 strokes of second place Manti.

The Grand Red Devils, last year’s state champions, have increased their overall region lead to 94 strokes just two meets into the season. Emery managed to trim Manti’s second place advantage to just 12 strokes, and extended their lead for third place to 27 over San Juan.

Following Wednesday’s meet, Emery head coach Kevin Reynolds announced that the team would be without promising freshman Jordan Ekker for the remainder of the year. Ekker broke his arm just days after posting the team’s fourth best score at Palisades.

Emery will continue the golf season on Aug. 25 when they travel to Grand.
