No one can ever say that Castle Heights Elementary Principal Chris Winfree isn’t a good sport.

Especially after what happened to him on September 2.

Winfree allowed kids in the school who had met their reading goals, to well, turn him into a human ice cream sundae.

Starting just after lunch, Winfree, be-goggled and with his feet in a kiddy swimming pool, sat in a chair as students from every grade level except kindergarten dropped ice cream, toppings and even cherrys on his head.

Kindergarteners got to watch the whole thing so next time they could read to their goals and get a crack at the principal too.

Known for various antics to inspire students when he was a teacher at a junior high in St. George before being principal at Castle Heights last year, he has carried on the tradition of letting students do things that would embarrass many other administrators.

“Last year I let them cover me with silly string,” he said as he was being bombed by vanilla scoops. “It got all over my face and in my nose. That stuff made it hard to breathe.”

While it may have seemed to take a long time to get Winfree covered with ice cream and syrup to onlookers, it was much longer for him. He wore googles to protect his eyes, but eventually they even leaked a little and he had to send them into the building for cleaning. He said that the ice cream and the syrup that did get in his eyes “really stung.”

Nonetheless his fun demeanor with the students, his high fives and his encouragement to them to reach for their goals as he was made a sticky mess was inspirational to many students whose eyes told a tale they would repeat and remember for years to come.
