Every week Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood stops by with a weekly update for the community on what his going on at the department. This week he wanted to reach out to the teens in our area regarding their cell phones and driving.

“You know I just want to remind everyone that its Homecoming Week, we got a lot of things going on with our teens this week. The texting and driving, just don’t do it, put your phones away, turn them off when you’re in your car. Carbon County is a small enough area you’re 10 minutes from everywhere. You can drive for 10 minutes and not have to worry about texting or answering your phone,” stated Wood. Parents should give their young drivers simple and clear instructions to not use their cell phone while driving.

“You know there is always the near miss that doesn’t end in an accident but could have been a catastrophe and it’s just a matter of time if you are looking at your phone and not looking at the road, you are going to drive off the road,” stated Wood. Drivers that look at their phone to read just one text is the equivalent of driving the length of a football field with your eyes off the road, so the driver has missed a lot of the road.

One single text increases the drivers chance of crashing by at least six times, according to a study by the University of Utah.
