The Carbon Dinos wrapped up the 2016 regular season with another win, this time reclaiming the Eastern Utah Cup at the Dinaland golf course in Vernal Monday afternoon.

Ryker Smith once again led the Dinos with a team low 319, topping second place Uintah by five strokes. Union finished in third with a final score of 341, playing without their top golfer who has led the team throughout the year.

“The win is the win and they accomplished that,” said head coach Tom King Tuesday on KOAL’s Drive Time Sports. “But we cannot be satisfied with these scores. I think 319 will make the cut at state, but that’s not our main goal. We want to win and improve on last year’s performance.”

Kayden Alderson helped push the Dinos to the win finishing with a 78. Joey Penovich and Ryan Gagon also logged scores counted towards the team’s final total, both finishing with an 83.

Winning the Eastern Utah Cup means the Dinos will regain control of the traveling trophy, which they lost last year. After winning the trophy in 2014, the team fell short in a setback at Uintah last year. The Eastern Utah Cup is an annual event that consists of Carbon, Uintah and Union.

With the regular season now complete the Dinos will look to expand on a very successful 2016 when they head to state at Soldier Hollow on Oct. 5 and 6. This season the Dinos have yet to lose a meet on their way to a Region 12 championship.

“This team is very capable of winning a state championship,” said King. “But everything has to come together. We are not as deep as some of the teams like Park City and Pine View. We need to have four scores 75 or better, and if we do that we can win.”
