The soccer season came to a close for the Emery Lady Spartans as they suffered a 7-0 loss to Waterford in the opening round of the 2A state championship tournament in Sandy Wednesday afternoon.

Entering the state tournament the No. 3 seed from Region 15, the Lady Spartans surrendered five goals in the opening half. Waterford added two more in the final 40 minutes to grab the lopsided win and advance in the state tournament.

Wednesday’s win runs Waterford’s winning streak to four, winning by shutout in all games during that time frame by a combined score of 36-0. Waterford will now meet Delta in the quarterfinals after the No. 1 seed Rabbits edged American Leadership 2-1, also on Wednesday.

In only their second year of existence the Lady Spartans soccer team has managed to advance to the postseason both years. Last year the team had a similar end to the season, losing in the opening round Maeser Prep.
