The Emery Spartans boys cross country team capped off a tremendous 2016 campaign as they raced to a second place finish at the state championship meet Wednesday afternoon at Sugarhouse Park in Salt Lake City.

Finishing with 83 points the Spartans fell to the state champions Millard by 11. North Summit finished in third with 93 points, followed by Maeser Prep and Delta. 12 total teams competed for the state crown after qualifying during region meets last week.

Chase Christiansen led the way for the Spartans finishing 12th overall completing the race in 17:15.9. Ty Funk finished right behind Christiansen, followed by Tanyon Allred to give the Spartans 12th, 13th and 14th finishes. McKay Meccariello finished 24th and Griffin Livingston ended in 30th to finish out the scorers for the team in the overall rankings.

Erin Hurst was the lone Lady Spartan to qualify for the state championship meet. The standout senior finished fifth overall with a final time of 19:53. Junior Sadie Sargent of North Summit High School claimed the individual state championship with a time of 17:58.

All six of Emery’s top finishers are underclassmen, meaning they are expected to return next season. On top of the second place performance at state, the team also claimed a Region 15 championship last week to qualify for the the meet.
