Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood comes in weekly to Castle Country Radio stations to let the community know what his department has been up to. This week he talks about attending the funeral for a fallen officer in West Valley City, traveling for the holidays and securing loads when citizens are headed to the landfill.

Although the fallen officer is not a local officer his death affects all law enforcement officials around the country including his brothers from Carbon County. Wood spoke about the services he attended, “We went up to the funeral for Officer Cody Brotherson, he was a West Valley City Police Officer that was killed in the line of duty and the out poor from the community is just amazing. Utah is ahead of the nation in my opinion for their support of law enforcement and I’m just proud to be a part of this community.” Visitors came from all over the state and as far as from Chicago and Texas.

On a more positive note, the Thanksgiving holiday is just right around the corner and citizens may have plans to travel for the break. It’s important that drivers are alert, safe and abide by the laws when driving to their destination. “You know it’s just not worth hurting yourself or hurting somebody else because of your impatience or poor driving habits. Just take your time and be courteous of other drivers would be a good thing,” stated Wood. There will be patrol officers out on the highways during the holiday enforcing the speed limits.

The Castle Country area has had a pretty unusual Fall season with warm temperatures. The weather report states that we could receive our first storm on Thursday and this could mean possible snow in our area. Wood gave sound advice for driving in the snow, “Leave early, drive slower than normal on the icy roads, go ahead and slow down before you come to an intersection. Don’t follow cars to closely, give yourself all the distance and room and things you need to react in the ice, know your car won’t stop like it does on the dry.” It’s important that drivers operate their vehicles with caution in inclement weather.

Citizens of Carbon County were notified on June 1 of this year that the Carbon County Landfill requires all loads to be covered and secured when heading to the dump. “If you are going to your home to the dump you need to have your load tarped the entire way. We have kind of been laxed on enforcing that but we will step up and start enforcing it,” warned Wood. The fine for uncovered and/or unsecured loads whether it be a truck or trailer starts at $300.00 plus community service hours may be required along with the fine. The reasoning for covering and securing loads is to eliminate the garbage and debris left on and along Airport Road. This has been an eyesore for years plus its hazardous to drivers who travel on that road.
