The Emery Spartans managed to keep their unbeaten record intact as they defeated the South Sevier Rams 75-67 Saturday evening at the 2A-3A Preview in Richfield at the Sevier Valley Center.

Trailing by five entering the fourth quarter, the Spartans outscored the Rams 24-11 in the final eight minutes to preserve the win. Koby Butler led all scorers with 25 points, and Zac Jorgensen knocked down seven three-point shots to finish with 21.

“It was a real entertaining game with a lot of big shots in the fourth quarter,” said head coach Todd Jeffs. “Zac Jorgensen really got hot for us, and I thought our guys played with great composure and didn’t turn the ball over.”

Seniors Bowdie Jacobson and Kolton Butler both chipped in with 12 points a piece, and junior Easton Gordon scored three. The Spartans played the game with a tight bench, using only Kyson Stilson off of the pine in a small role.

Caleb Barton paced the South Sevier offense with 20 points, 18 of which came from beyond the perimeter. Brodee Tebbs scored 16 in the losing effort, and Tyson Chisholm poured in 13 as the Rams dipped to 1-3 on the young season.

Saturday’s win assured the Spartans a perfect 2-0 record at the 2A-3A Preview for the second consecutive year, while improving their overall season record to 3-0. Friday the team used a quick start to ease past Waterford 63-45.

“I was pretty glad to get the wins down there, but more than the wins the experience was good,” said Jeffs. “It was a good opportunity to play on the floor where the state tournament will be held.”

Emery will have an opportunity to extend their unbeaten record to 4-0 on Tuesday when they travel to meet 1A Green River. The team will participate in their first home contest of the season on Friday against Millard.
