The Emery Spartans wrapped up the regional portion of the wrestling schedule as they traveled to Richfield for the divisional tournament this past Friday and Saturday.
Competing against teams throughout the 2A classification, 11 of the 18 participating wrestlers punched their ticket to the state finale with top-eight finishes. Amongst though 11 were two divisional champions in Ty Mecham and Gus Dalton.
Entering the divisional tournament with a record of 38-7, Mecham received a bye all the way to the semifinals. Going toe-to-toe with teammate A.C. Reeve for a chance to advance, Mecham ended the match with a pin in 29 seconds. The domination continued in the championship match with another first round pin, this time against North Summit’s Eduardo Rodriguez.
Dalton’s route the championship was a little more difficult as he was forced to win three consecutive matches. The first came over Enterprise sophomore Benjamin Rowley by majority decision. Dalton then earned a 6-4 overtime victory over North Summit’s Trevor Staley. The championship was decided by pinfall against Grand junior Dakota Johnson.
Below is the complete individual results for Emery. Those who finished in the top eight will now turn their attention to the state championship at Utah Valley University in Orem on Friday and Saturday.
