Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood likes to keep the community posted on what is happening with his department by stopping into the Castle Country Radio Stations. His visit brought the discussion of counterfeit bills making their way around to local businesses as well as mentioning registration for the annual Search and Rescue Demolition Derby which is set to take place in August.

Price City Police issued a news release on Friday, June 2 with detailed information warning citizens of counterfeit bills circulating in the area. “Twenties and hundreds are the common ones but it can be any denomination. So if you’re taking money from people you don’t know or anybody for that matter, look at it, if it doesn’t feel right, if it’s slick and shiny, it’s probably a counterfeit bill,” said Wood. Businesses or individuals can speak with their banking institutions about purchasing counterfeit money detector pens that help determine authenticity of currency by just making a mark across the bill which then produces a color that helps find out whether it’s genuine or not.

The bills that are currently making the rounds in the Castle Valley area are displaying the same serial numbers and on the back of some of the bills there is a irregularity in the wording which states Motion Picture Use Only. The currency can make it’s way through several places before the business or individual takes to the bank. “The person that finally takes that to a bank, when it finally hits a bank and gets discovered that person is out the money; the bank won’t take it and they have very sophisticated technology to look for that. So you want to be careful, if you’re stuck with a counterfeit bill and you may not know, but you’ve been scammed,” said Wood. If any citizens experience receipt of counterfeit money please contact the local law enforcement agencies.

The Search and Rescue Team is currently preparing for their annual Demolition Derby scheduled for August. The team consists of many dedicated citizens in the Carbon County area that donate their personal time to search for and assist aid to people who are in distress or imminent danger. “They generate their money through fund-raising efforts with the demolition derby and all the things that lead up to that. You’ll see them at International Days, I know they’re planning on going there selling scones. We’re going to build a derby car from Search and Rescue if you are a person that is interested in driving a car but don’t want to build one, you could win that opportunity, I think they will have two, I think they are going to reuse that one from last year,” said Wood. The classes for this year’s derby are the minis, the 80s or newer chain/bang and new this year is the misfits. Event organizers hope that the new divisions added will increase more individuals to participate in what is sure to be the best derby in years.

There is still time to take advantage of the discounted registration fee as Wood explains further, “Right now if you are building a car, now is a good time to sign up because you can pick what number you want, but someone else may have picked your number if you don’t get there fast and it’s half $25.00 to register a car right now through the end of June, after that it will go to $50.00.” To learn more about the categories, rules and/or to register visit Tire King at 535 East Main Street.
