More than 100 youth baseball players were on hand to participate in Spencer’s Wishes Swing True For Life Baseball Clinic, hosted by the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association, Saturday afternoon at Smith’s Ballpark in Salt Lake City.

Several former Major League Baseball players, including 1960 Cy Young winner and World Series Champion Vern Law, provided the instruction throughout the afternoon. Members of the current Salt Lake Bees roster, including outfielder Jabari Blash, also joined in on the fun.

“It was just an afternoon full of basic fundamentals taught by guys who love the game of baseball,” said Spencer’s Wishes Vice President Phil Roundy. “I want to thank all of those parents and kids who were willing to come out to the clinic. I hope they enjoyed it as much as I did.”

After the three hour clinic wrapped up, those participating were treated to a free pizza lunch. Each child’s family also received tickets to watch the Bees take on the Albuquerque Isotopes later in the evening.

Each year Roundy’s organization pays the MLBPAA to host the clinic at Smith’s Ballpark. That money is immediately turned into a $1,000.00 scholarship for boys and girls who have lettered in baseball or softball in Emery or Carbon Counties, but have not received a scholarship to play at the next level.

“We’ve all enjoyed doing it and working with Spencer’s Wishes,” said former California Angels shortstop Bruce Christensen “We’ve been doing this now for 32 years and the money we’ve generated has turned into almost two-hundred-thousand dollars in scholarships.”

Applications for the MLBPAA scholarships are welcomed through Tuesday, May 1. Following the deadline four graduating high school seniors will be selected to receive the money to further their education.
