sheriff-weekly-update

Not only are the temperatures increasing but so does summer crimes especially property crime. Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood took time on his weekly update to discuss ways citizens can protect themselves.

“So, as it gets warmer you’ll have more activity out at night and it’s an opportunity for those that might be a bit dishonest to bring into your car, it takes less than a minute,” stated Wood. “About $1.26 billion a year in personal items are stolen from cars and that equates to about 1.85 million thefts.” Seasonal crime during the summer tends to show that cars and homes are popular targets.

Some simple tips can help to keep your property safe. “If you are staying at a motel or you’re out of town or somewhere like that and you’re parking in a parking lot, park where you can see your car, I even do it when I go to restaurants,” said Wood. Don’t make it easy for criminals to target you, make sure doors are locked, windows rolled up and the alarm system is activated. Always park near other people go where there’s plenty of pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

“Don’t leave your purse out in plain sight, don’t leave your cell phone out in plain sight, don’t leave your charges to that stuff out in plain sight because that’s an indicator that it’s there somewhere,” said Wood. Make sure that your valuables are out of sight this goes for items like shopping bags, backpacks, small electronics, CDs and cash.

Historically, Carbon County has seen burglaries take place in neighborhoods so it’s important to lock up your vehicles, garages, homes and close windows. Ask your neighbors to help keep an eye out for any suspicious activity or persons. Call law enforcement if you feel that something just doesn’t feel right.
