The Emery Lady Spartans advanced to the quarterfinals of the 3A State Championship Soccer Tournament with a 4-1 victory over the Carbon Lady Dinos Tuesday afternoon in Price.

Holding a 2-1 lead at the end of the first half, the Lady Spartans scored two more goals in the second to secure the win. The loss for Carbon brings the girl’s soccer season to a close.

Alexis Winter found the back of the net twice to lead the Lady Spartans to victory. Shelbee Murdoch and Sophie Huntington both scored one goal in the win.

Carbon struggled to work through the daunting Emery defense. The lone goal of the game came on a mistake from the Spartans as they scored in their own goal.

“Were very proud of our team, they played their hearts out,” said Carbon head soccer coach Cynthia Lancaster, “It just didn’t go our way, they had a great season, and were really happy.”

Both teams entered the state tournament as No. 3 seeds from their respective regions. Emery finished with a league record of 4-3-1, while Carbon ended 7-5-0.

The Lady Spartans will now advance to the quarterfinals Saturday afternoon against the winner of Thursday’s contest between Judge Memorial and American Leadership Academy. A Judge Memorial win means Emery will travel, if ALA wins the Saturday game will be played in Castle Dale.
