The Emery High School boys cross country team earned a second place finish at 3A State Championship Tournament Wednesday afternoon at Sugarhouse Park in Salt Lake City.

An 18-point advantage lifted the Morgan Trojans past the Spartans for the overall championship. Grantsville finished 18 points back of Emery for third place, while Union and Grand rounded out the top five. A total of 11 schools competed in the season finale.

Led by sophomore Bryar Meccariello’s fourth place performance the Spartans earned a top-two finish for the third consecutive season. After claiming second in 2016, Emery won the state title in 2017.

McKay Meccarillo recorded the second fastest individual time at 17:06.7 for 14th place. Chase Christiansen was 15th overall, followed by Jess Christiansen in 17th and Beau Cook in 26th.

The Emery Lady Spartans ended 10th overall as they accumulated 256 points, finishing last in the girl’s field. Morgan was once again the top school in first place, followed by Grand and Richfield.

Adaley Lester logged the top individual performance, finishing 27th overall with a time of 22:05.1. Carlie Bennett and Bethany Justice ended in the top 55, while Elli Whitesel and Daicee Ungerman closed out the five scores in 60 and 61st place.
