The Emery Lady Spartans overcame a half time deficit to edge past the Beaver Beavers 35-31 Tuesday night at the Spartan Center in Castle Dale.

Locked in a 10-10 at the end of the first quarter, the Emery offense sputtered in the second as Beaver captured a 19-14 advantage at the break. Responding with a 14-4 run in the third, the Lady Spartans closed out the contest in the fourth to move to 5-0 on the season.

Senior Megan Jensen scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds in Emery’s first true test of the season. Kacelyn Toomer logged a double-double by scoring 10 points and accumulating 10 rebounds. Morgan Hurdsman chipped in with eight points.

Beaver was led by standout Sydnee Gillins who finished with 11 points and four rebounds. Brooklyn Crum donated seven points, while two others finished with four.

Entering Tuesday’s contest unbeaten Emery had won its previous four games by an average win margin of 32 points. Last season Beaver also pushed Emery, but fell short as the Lady Spartans earned a 52-49 win.

Emery will now take the next two days off before participating in the Central Utah Girls Basketball Preview at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield Friday morning against Parowan. The weekend tournament will come to a close for Emery Saturday morning against Enterprise.
