Carbon County Commissioner Tony Martines has jumped in head first when it comes to his Commissioner duties and responsibilities by kicking off the new year by sitting in on his first official Commissioner’s Meeting on January 8. This was a perfect chance for Castle Country Radio to catch up with Commissioner Martines to speak with him about his plans and vision for the county.

“A couple of things that I ran on were economic development and the budgets. We are deeply in trenched to that right now. The budget obviously as we all know the revenue is not what it use to be, but we’re looking at ways to increase the revenue, to not default on the loans that we have and trying to attract some new businesses as well,” stated Commissioner Martines. The economic development side does have some opportunities coming up that could benefit the county’s budget.

One of those prospects came from a meeting Martines had with some individuals from the Advance Coal Research organization. “Surprisingly enough there are a couple of people that are looking to develop coal mines in Carbon County, not specifically for the coal itself, obviously that’s one of the reasons because it’s here, but because of the rail spur. That is one of the main things that are attracting these people to invest their dollars when coal has a bad name right now it’s because of the infrastructure we have right now,” explained Martines. Although this is in the early stage of talks and nothing is set in stone the possibility could do so much for the local economy.
