Another storm brought in much-needed snow to the Carbon County area on Tuesday and this can pose some danger if heading to the backcountry.

“There’s already some up there and you know that is what I want to talk about today is just be careful up in the backcountry with old snow and new snow and they’re saying feet of snow this week in the mountains is coming,” explained Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood. “That makes for high avalanche danger and also what you see in town isn’t what’s up there. So, when you get up in those areas just be ready, just be prepared.” Most importantly let family or friends know exactly where you plan to be just in case something was to happen and cell service is not available. Other important factors to remember is to take plenty of water and food, means to build a fire and know areas where you have cell phone service. If individuals find themselves in trouble call 911 immediately, it is most likely the Carbon County Search and Rescue team will be instantly notified of the situation. The team is readily available at any given moment and are highly trained for any scenario they face.

Traveling through the snow can be a tough situation especially if roads are not cleared but it can be just as tough for the drivers of the snow plows if residents are blocking roadways. “Help them, help you. Make sure you have your vehicles off the street. So, make sure you do that when it’s going to snow, get your vehicles off the street. If not, they will call us and we’ll have to come up and ask you to move your vehicles,” stated Sheriff Wood. Drivers must be cautious when sharing the roads with snowplow drivers never attempt to pass a plow, always follow at a safe distance and allow plenty of time to travel to your destination.
