Price City has been wanting to sponsor an Area Youth Council for years and that has now become a reality. As of July 2018, a group of high school students from the various cities of Helper, Price, Wellington and East Carbon make up the Area Youth Council organization.

“We had a chance to write a charter, they have outlined their responsibilities, they’ve outlined what they are going to do and that means from reporting to Price City Council and also to involve us on their thoughts on the matter of what needs to be done to enhance Carbon County and to make sure that we are on the same page as they are,” stated Price City Council Member, Rick Davis. This group also gets the opportunity through their experience to learn about the structure and inner workings of the city and county government.

The young group of 12 students work alongside their advisor who is retired Carbon High School teacher Terri Tubbs. “With that they have set up their own charter as Rick said, and they have a mayor, they have a city council or council members, they have a treasurer, they have a recording, and they have a media person who takes care of trying to get the word out to the kids,” said Price City Council Member, Terry Willis. The meetings that have been attended by Willis have been very impressive and the group of students are very enthusiastic about making a difference in their community by letting their voices and ideas be heard.

Not only are the students getting a lesson in civic involvement at a government level but they are also giving back through service. “Well, I know in this last snow storm they were out shoveling walks for the elderly, making sure that people who couldn’t get out and clear their walkways those things were done. They did it without pay, they did it without anybody asking, they just showed up to do that,” explained Willis. The students have also lent a helping hand to Carbon Caring for Kids which is a non-profit organization that prepares weekend meals for various school-aged students in need.

The Price City Council have enjoyed working with the Area Youth Council because of their unique ideas and feedback. Both councils are looking forward to continuing a working relationship with one another in an effort to make a positive impact on the community.
