The Emery Spartans completed the 2018-19 season swim season with successful performances at the State Championship Meet Thursday evening at Brigham Young University in Provo.

Despite logging three first place finishes in the 11 events the Emery boy’s team ended second overall, finishing eight points behind Grand for the State Championship. Millard ended in third with 189 points, followed by Grantsville and Telos.

The Emery Lady Spartans gathered 234 points, finishing fourth in a tight race for the top spot on the girl’s side of the pool. Carbon won the state crown with 267 points, followed by Rowland Hall’s 266 and Judge Memorial’s 257. Richfield rounded out the top five with 199 points.

The first Emery win came in the 16th event as Deegan Minchey, Parker Stilson, Asher Beagley and Keldon Guymon took home first place in the 200 yard free relay with a time of 1:35.54. The same group later claimed first in the 400 yard free relay.

Guymon claimed the lone individual first place finish for the Spartans in the 100 yard breaststroke with a final time of 59.70. Guymon also earned 3A swimmer of the year honors for a dominating 2018-19 campaign.

Minchey helped gather points with a second place nod in the 100 yard backstroke, and third place in the 200 yard free.

The second place team finish ends a streak of two straight state championships for the Spartans. Since 2014 Emery has finished inside the top two each year, winning three championships in the process.

Sydney Terwilleger, Haley Guymon, Kaelee Hooley and Brianne Bass ended the 200 yard medley with a second place finish with a time of 2:00.52. The performance gave the Lady Spartans a boost right out of the gate in the first event of the afternoon.

Individually Guymon delivered in two other events. A time of 2:24.66 was good enough for a third place finish in the 200 yard IM. She later ended second in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:11.00.
