The recent warm temperatures have folks out enjoying the spring-like conditions and Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood wanted to remind the community that it’s important to be cautious when driving and sharing the roads this time of year.

“You got people that are wanting to get their exercise going, you got kids at the bus stops, you’ve got a lot of foot traffic in our neighborhoods. So, you have Westwood – I get all kinds of speeder complaints in Westwood and stop sign runners. I just want to give everybody a heads up, we’re going to start extra patrolling those areas and we’re going to be writing tickets in those areas. So, if you are one of those people that are habitual speeding in that area this is your warning – slow down please,” stated Sheriff Wood. Other areas that will have extra patrols visible will be Carbonville, Spring Glen, Kenilworth, plus parts of upper and lower Millercreek. Drivers are urged to be courteous when sharing the road with pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcycles.

Another issue that has come to light involves the bike trails located up and around Wood Hill. “You know we have a really nice bicycle trail system as you are aware and we want to keep it that way. Make sure you’re not riding motorized vehicles on those trails. We’ve now got trail cameras on there and we’re kind of surveilling that area – Woodhill and all that where the bikes are. Make sure that your kids are not on those trails. The trails are clearly marked they’re not for motorized travel,” said Sheriff Wood.

Volunteers are who maintenances the trails and those trails are utilized not only by local enthusiasts but by folks from out of town too. We would like to leave a positive impression on our visitors.

The investigation into the bicycle trail system has also brought to light the illegal dumping that is occurring in that area. “The other thing that I had up there at the trail system, somebody decided they wanted to dump their household garbage up there, a whole load of it and we got to looking around and found several dump sites up there. We’ve sent inmates up and we’ve cleaned one of the sites. That’s another thing that we need to work on. I understand that the dump is closed at different times and it’s inconvenient but that doesn’t give you free rein to go dump where ever you want. Because our Cedars area up by the airport and up on Wood Hill are getting to be pretty polluted,” said Sheriff Wood. Any community members who observe illegal dumping are strongly urged to report it to the authorities immediately.
