The Emery Spartans track and field boy’s team completed the 2019 season with a third place finish at the 3A State Championship Meet Friday and Saturday in Provo at Brigham Young University.

Entering the meet fresh off of a Region 15 championship performance, the Spartans logged 71.5 points, which placed the team 25 behind first place Morgan and 17.5 behind Grand. Delta and Richfield rounded out the top five.

“I think the boys went out there and a couple did a little bit better than expected,” said coach Erik Nielsen. “When the times came in across the board they all ran some of their best times. I couldn’t be happier with how they performed.”

Junior Braiden Ivie earned two state championships as he defeated the field in both the 100 and 200 meters. Finishing the 100 meters with a time of 10.91, Ivie defeated Grand’s Eli Hazlett’s time of 11.30.

The two finished also finished first and second in the 200 meters as Ivie ended with a time of 21.70, while Hazlett ran down a time of 22.57.

The 4X400 team consisting of Treven Brazier, Mason Faimalo, Keldan Guymon, Chase Christiansen, Jace Curtis and Braiden Ivie finished second by the smallest of margins. Ending with a time of 3:27.60, Emery just finished behind first place Richfield’s time of 3:27.58.

Earlier in the meet Guymon gave the Emery boy’s a second place finish in the javelin, with a metric throw of 48.18.

The Emery Lady Spartans ended the season with a last place finish in the field of 15 teams. Delta came out on top with a final score of 94, followed by Juab’s 85 and Grand at 65. Union and Morgan completed the top five.

“Those girls earned the right to be there and compete,” said Nielsen. “Whitney Christensen placed in the high jump and Megan Jensen ended eighth in the javelin. Those were nice surprises and a great way to end the season.”

Friday and Saturday’s finale brings an end to an exciting track and field season. The results from this year sets up what should be another exciting season in 2020.

“I think we have a lot of potential moving into next season,” Nielsen said when asked about the team’s future. “As I look at it, we really have someone in every event that can go to the state meet and place.”
