The Helper Merchants moved to 4-0 in division play and 7-1 overall with a double-header sweep of Vernal Wednesday afternoon on the road.

Playing for the first time this week because of inclement weather, Helper was electric offensively, recording 22 hits and 24 runs in the two games. Last week the Merchants swept Roosevelt in a home double-header.

“These were two solid wins for us,” said manager Dakota Cisneros. “We struggled for a couple of innings in the second game, but finally found a groove and didn’t look back.”

Nathan Richens blasted a Grand Slam and Anthony Jones delivered a solo home run in the first two innings to give Helper an immediate advantage. Cody Lowe later hit a home run as he finished 1-4 with a solo shot. The Merchants continued to ride the offensive momentum in an eventual 11-2 victory.

Kaden Dimick earned the win on the mound, allowing just five hits and two runs, while striking out six in six innings of work. Tyler Wright closed out the final three batters, securing the win for Helper.

Returning the diamond almost immediately, Helper continued to smash the ball at the plate in a 13-7 win.

Kaleb Nelson pitched the first three innings of the contest, allowing six hits and five runs, while striking out three. Jaxon Carlisle worked the remainder of the game in relief fanning ten batters, while giving up five hits and two runs.

Lowe continued to find success at the dish as he smacked two home runs and ended with three RBIs. Anthony Jones ended 3-3 with three singles, one walk, three RBIs and two stolen bases. As a team Helper finished with 12 hits.

“I was very pleased with the way we played and competed all around,” said Cisneros. “We displayed some power as a team, hitting five home runs.”

The Merchants will now take two days off before returning to the field on Saturday for a home double-header against Westlake. The team will hold a memorial for long time Carbon County baseball supporter Frank Marquez before the first game, which is scheduled for 6:00 p.m..
