The Carbon Dinos will begin the 2019 golf season on Wednesday, July 31 when the team heads to Roosevelt for the Region 12 opener.

Led by second year head coach Brett Johnson, the Dinos are poised to make some noise in the highly competitive 3A classification, which comes equipped with three new regions. This year’s team will also feature returners Brady Gagon, Nick Olson, Kaden Slavensky and Jordan Penovich.

“We did lose Carson Martines and Tyler Yoklavich, but this year we do have a couple of really talented kids coming in,” said Johnson Thursday on KOAL’s Drive Time Sports. “I’m really excited for some of our freshman coming that are going to push these older kids.”

Last season Gagon joined Martines as members on the All-State Second Team. Gagon’s final score of 158 at the 3A State Tournament helped the Dinos clinch a top five finish for the fourth consecutive year.

“Brady is a very talented athlete. He can play any sport and play it very well,” Johnson said. “My expectations are him playing competitive golf and making a good run at the state title. He’s a fun kid to be around and he always lifts the team’s spirit.”

Slavensky and Penovich will both look to build off of a successful 2018 season, where both were named Honorable Mentions for the All-State Team.

Wednesday’s season/region opener will give the team an opportunity to play at this year’s State Tournament site, which will take place the first week of October.

“It’s nice to start the region season off by playing at the state site,” Johnson said when asked about the first meet. “We play Roosevelt quite often, so we know the golf course fairly well.”

Wednesday’s meet will also give Carbon an opportunity to compete against a brand new region. For the next two seasons the Dinos will share the region with Richfield, Grand, Emery, South Sevier and San Juan. Richfield finished third last year at the 3A State Tournament, while both Grand and Emery ended in the top eight.

“We have a couple of extra teams that can and will push us a bit more than in the past,” said Johnson as he assessed the new region. “All any coach wants is to have competition that actually makes you better and gets you going.”
