Now that school is back in session it is time for the weekly updates with Carbon School District where they highlight a school once a week. This year kicks off with new Carbon High School Principal Chris Winfree who spoke about all the fun changes that have taken place just in time for the 2019-2020 school year.

“If you get a chance to come into Carbon please come in see some of the changes that we have made. Most of them are minor right now, a few more things still coming but the biggest one you’d notice if you were a parent trying to come into the school is the front office. Right now, the way that you’d work with the front office instead of going into the office you’ll actually work through teller windows through the main hall,” explained Principal Winfree. This is a great addition for the office as it keeps foot traffic moving and eliminates any congestion of visitors going through the office.

There have also been some cosmetic changes that has taken place inside the school’s main hallway. “We removed some doorways to make things look more open down main hall, painting has been going on all summer inside the school, bright white halls, covering over the brick to just make it look brighter and more open,” stated Principal Winfree. The new changes make it a more welcoming atmosphere

Enrollment at the school has also increased leading the school to set up a few more classrooms at the back of the building. “So now instead of two portables out back we actually have four portables behind the school with eight classrooms. It’s a great problem to have to have because it means our numbers are going up but it just adds to the fun challenge of getting kids in and out of buildings and managing all that,” said Principal Winfree. Once the school year progresses the students will become more accustomed to the outdoor classrooms.

As far as faculty there have been some additions since the Lighthouse High School has been moved over to Carbon this year. Principal Winfree talks about the benefits of the added faculty, “The strengths of all the different teachers we have now can be utilized for all students. The programs that have been running at Carbon for years are great and amazing programs and Carbon has seen tremendous success and we wanted the students at the Lighthouse to have those same opportunities and on the flip side the things that the Lighthouse teachers have been able to do with kids over at the Lighthouse we wanted to have those services for all students at Carbon High School as well.” Although the school year has just begun the transition of the Lighthouse to Carbon has been going well for both students and faculty members.

Winfree is looking forward to a great school year at his new digs and hopes that students along with their parents are ready for an amazing school year as well.
