Despite a competitive contest throughout, the Carbon Dinos were unable to keep pace with the Union Cougars in the fourth quarter, falling 45-26 in the home opener Friday night.

Entering Friday’s game with hopes of winning for a second consecutive week, the Dinos trailed Union 12-6 at the end of the first quarter. The game remained a back-and-forth one score contest, until the Cougars scored 13 unanswered in the fourth quarter to pull away for good.

Senior quarterback Tyler Wright continued his streak of consistence play, completing 9-17 passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns, while throwing one interception. Wright connected with fellow senior Brandon August for both touchdown passes in the contest.

Junior Cooper Schade led the Carbon rushing attack as he accumulated 83 yards on 17 carries, averaging just under five yards per touch. Senior Jaylon Dennis worked as the complimentary back, gathering 70 yards on eight carries, while finding the end zone once.

Dennis continued to be a staple of the Carbon offense, gathering 187 all purpose yards throughout the contest. He has now scored five touchdowns in two games.

The bulk of Union’s offensive production came from senior quarterback Lincoln Labrum. The dual threat quarterback had success with both his arm and legs, throwing for two touchdowns and running for two more. Finishing with 381 yards of total offense, Labrum threw for 232, while running for 149.

Union senior Colten Harding also passed the 100-yard barrier in the win for the Cougars. Accumulating 22 carries throughout the game, Harding scored twice and finished with 148 yards on the ground.

Friday’s loss in the non-region finale dips Carbon to 1-3 on the young season. The win improves Union to 2-3, while ending a two-game losing skid.

Up next Carbon will welcome in the Richfield Wildcats this Friday for homecoming. The region opener will serve as a rematch of last year’s opening round playoff contest, which ended in Richfield’s favor.

Live coverage of Friday’s contest is scheduled to begin at 6:20 on KRPX 95.3 The Peak. Kickoff will follow shortly after at 7:00 p.m..
