A second place tie in the final region competition of the season was more than enough for the Carbon Dinos to clinch its fifth consecutive Region 12 championship Monday afternoon at the Palisades Golf course in Sterling.

Holding a monumental 76-stroke over second place Grand entering the final meet, the Dinos ended with a team score of 360, a season-high in 2019. Grand equaled Carbon’s 360, while Richfield finished at the top with a 345. South Sevier, Emery and San Juan completed the field of six.

Freshman Bode Salas again led the Dinos with a low score of 84. Senior Nick Olsen was second with an 87, followed by Jordan Penovich and his 94. Freshman Daron Garner provided the fourth score a 95.

While Carbon struggled, by their own standards in the season finale, the performance closed out the inevitable region championship outcome. Holding a sizable advantage throughout the season, Carbon won six of the nine divisional meets, including a the home competition by 25-strokes on Sept. 12.

Salas capped off an amazing freshman campaign by becoming the top individual golfer in the region. His most notable performance of the season came in the home meet where he shot a season low 68. Olsen and Kaden Slavensky both finished inside the top six, helping Carbon to the division win.

Carbon will now shift their focus to 3A State Championship meet, which will take place Wednesday, Oct. 2 and Thursday, Oct. 3 in Roosevelt. The top two teams from each of the three 3A regions have qualified automatically, while the remaining eight schools will be determined by average meet score.
