On Saturday, the Carbon High Marching Band traveled to Payson High School to perform in the Nebo Tournament of Bands marching band competition. This was the first time the band had performed their field show away from Carbon County and in front of judges. This year’s show is titled “Our Carbon County Home” and includes songs that celebrate Carbon’s railroad and coal mining heritage.

For the first time, the Dinos competed in the 3A classification with “school-size” 3A bands only. In the past, classifications were based on band size. Schools who had a band between 42 and 79 members performed in the 3A classification. Starting this season, the marching band circuit has changed the classification system to match the system used by the Utah High School Athletics Association. This policy change allows bands to compete with schools that have more comparable regional demographics.

The CHS Marching Band performed early in the day with the threat of bad weather looming. Fortunately, the stormy weather held off and the band performed very well. When awards were announced, Carbon marched away with the Best Percussion Award and finished first place overall in the 3A classification, holding off bands from Delta, Grantsville, and Grand County. The win in Payson was the first marching band award since the early 1990’s and their first field show competition championship.

Up next for the CHS Band is a performance at Helper Middle School on October 9th for the halftime of the HMS/MHMS football game. The band will also perform at halftime of the CHS football game on October 11th. Both performances will help the band prepare for the Wasatch Front Marching Band Invitational competition October 12th at Herriman High School.

The CHS band wishes to thank the many volunteers that have helped out all season, and our amazing sponsors: Harold and Joyce Cunningham, Bookcliff Sales, Savage, and the Southeastern Utah Energy Producers Association.
