It seems as though the fall weather has crept in with cooler temperatures over the last week which means drivers may be warming up their cars in the mornings. Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood took the time to speak about precautions that drivers should start thinking about doing now that we are approaching cooler months.

“Its time to start thinking, you don’t have to do it right away, but it’s time to start thinking about getting your car ready for the winter conditions. So, you should have your car serviced for winter conditions, get your battery checked. Your battery power decreases as temperatures drop, making it harder to start your car and if your battery is already kind of bad, this is the time of year that it dies,” explained Sheriff Jeff Wood. Winterizing your vehicle is part of performing regular maintenance so that your vehicle can handle the cold weather and winter road conditions.

Sheriff Wood also reminded folks to check their cooling system, “Make sure that you have the right anti-freeze for wintertime and make sure of course that all your belts, hoses and all that stuff is good to go. You don’t want to be broken down on the side of the road.” Its not a bad idea for drivers to carry an emergency kit in the vehicle, especially during the winter months.

Another thought is for drivers to always keep their gas tank half full during the winter months. “I’m always harping on my kids, keep your gas tank half full especially in the wintertime. If you get stranded on the side of the road that is your heat source and of course keep your defrosters working and learn emergency preparedness. If you do get stuck somewhere on a lonely road don’t get out of sight of your vehicle because if the wind is blowing and snowing you may lose sight of it and not get back to it,” stated Sheriff Wood. Preparing your vehicle now for the cold winter weather helps to avoid possible emergencies at a later time.
