The Carbon Dinos wrapped up the 2019 golf season with a third place finish in the 3A State Championship Tournament Thursday afternoon at the Roosevelt Golf Course.
Entering the final day in fifth place, the Dinos shot an overall team score of 327, shaving off 19-strokes from their day-one score. Combining the complete scores Carbon finished with a 673, five shots better than fourth place Richfield.
The Morgan Trojans claimed their second straight 3A State Championship by shooting a blistering 621. At the top of the leaderboard after Wednesday’s initial round, the Trojans shaved 13-strokes off of their score to maintain a comfortable lead. Judge Memorial ended second with a final score of 642.
Carbon freshman Bode Salas delivered a sensational round Thursday afternoon by shooting a 72. Improving his score by nine strokes, Salas ended third overall on the individual leaderboard.
Seniors Kaden Slavensky, Nick Olson and Jordan Penovich all ended with an 85 on Thursday, rounding out Carbon’s score of 327. The 85 for Penovich was an 11-stroke improvement from Wednesday’s outing.
The third place finish marks the fifth consecutive season that Carbon has finished inside the top five at the state tournament. Last year the team finished fifth overall after shooting a 640.
The 2019 season was an eventful one for the Carbon Dinos. Opening a massive stroke lead over the regional competition, the Dinos clinched their fifth straight division crown in late September. Salas and fellow freshman Daron Garner contributed top four team scores for most of the second half of the season.
