The Green River Pirates opened the basketball season last Friday night, and their offense and defense were on display against West Ridge Academy from West Jordan. Holding their opponents to 17 points, the Pirates would go on to hit the century mark defeating them 100-17.

West Ridge, a 1A team from Region 21 could only come up with three points in the first half of play while Green River was able to take a 50-3 lead into the locker room at half-time. The second half would be more of the same with West Ridge putting up four points in the third quarter and 10 in the fourth.

The Pirates had 11 players score with five of them in double figures. Junior Rad Hughes led all scorers with 24 points, seniors Sam Corrigan and Axel Anguiano each dropped in 14 points to add to the offensive onslaught as Green River would hit the century mark for the first time in nearly eight years when they scored 111 against Navajo Mountain in February of 2012.

This years team is stocked with veteran players, the Pirates lost only three seniors off of last years squad and had five return. Four juniors, two sophomores and one freshman round out the remainder of the group for the 2019-20 campaign.

The boys team will take to the court again on December 6, as they travel to Manila High School for tournament play.
