The students at Sally Mauro Elementary have been busy with phonics, house system activities, and Christmas Tree Regalia this month. Principal Blake Allen was excited to stop into the Castle Radio Station to let the community know all about the fun things taking place at the school.

“We have a phonics program that is teaching the younger grades, we’re actually doing it in a lot of the grades. But it’s basically teaching the kids the basics of reading and I know the district – a big focus is reading and I feel, as well as, the Sally Mauro Family, we feel that phonics program is going really well,” said Principal Allen. He credits this to the dedication of the educators, para-professionals, as well as, the hard work from the students.

The school has implemented a house system for the whole school to follow for the entire year.  “We do a house system up there, its kind of a reward system. We split all the students and the whole school into a house and then we have house meetings. In those meetings, we teach them lessons. For that house system, we basically focus on positive behavior, a growth mindset, and community service. We want the students to be well-rounded, not just students but individuals in the community,” stated Principal Allen. The school hosts friendly competitions between the houses and rewards them with various activities. So far, the winning houses have been given the opportunity to saran wrap the principal to the flag pole, toss eggs at the principal and even got to play a game of dodgeball against the school’s administration, including the District’s Superintendent, Lance Hatch.

The Sally Mauro students have also been busy with a few community service projects one of which took place last week as they entered a tree into the Christmas Tree Regalia event. “Our tree was kind of like a western bull theme, we are the Sally Mauro Bulls. A lot of those ornaments that were on our tree were touched by at least six students. By that, I mean at least six students helped make each ornament. Our tree at the tree regalia looked great I accredit that to all the students Sally Mauro, as well as Carma Whiting,” said Principal Allen. Carma Whiting is the school’s art teacher who was the driving force behind the project. They also hosted a food drive during the event where they surpassed last year’s numbers and took two truckloads of food to the local food bank.
