Despite finding early success on the offensive side of the floor, the Carbon Dinos failed to keep pace with the Richfield Wildcats in an eventual 51-29 setback Wednesday night at home.

Trailing 15-11 at the end of the opening quarter, the Dinos failed reach double-figures in any of the remaining three periods. The Wildcats used a 32-9 run between the second and third stanzas to pull away for good.

Senior Brady Gagon scored a team best nine points to lead the Dinos in Wednesday’s setback. Rylan Hart contributed eight, while Preston Condie and Keenan Hatch each finished with four.

Wednesday’s loss moves Carbon to 1-4 in Region 12 play and 6-10 overall on the season. Ranked No. 14 in the latest RPI update, the Dinos hold a slim lead in percentage points over No. 15 North Sanpete.

Richfield forward Josh Thalman posted a game-high 13 points, well below his season average of 19. Morgan Albrecht finished with 10 and Max Robinson contributed nine.

The Wildcats remain the No. 2 ranked team in the 3A classification and finish the first round of Region 12 play as the only unbeaten team in the division.

Carbon will now shift its focus to Friday’s region contest as they’ll welcome in the South Sevier Rams for the second and final meeting this regular season. South Sevier won the first outing between the two squads 74-46 in Monroe.
