Its that time of year again for Castle Country Radio to conduct weekly Legislative updates with Representative Christine F. Watkins and Senator David P. Hinkins. This first week kicked off with Representative Watkins who took time from her busy schedule to speak with listeners.

“We’re just getting started holding committees. We have to go through that process of getting bills to the Rules Committee and then have a second reading and then they go out to committees and so we’re actually starting committee meetings today,” explained Representative Watkins.  The Legislative weekly updates will take place over the next seven weeks.

This week there will be some focus put on House Bill 34 as Representative Watkins explains, “Well House Bill 34 is a bill that would not allow minors, anyone under 18 period. Parent permission can’t have it. You can not use a tanning bed. Of course, there is a lot of data, there’s a lot of science behind this and the younger you are if you get sunburns, if you get excessive tanning it can cause, the big issue of melanoma.”  This is an attempt by many concerned parents and medical professionals to help the youth in the state.

“So this bill is going to come back up again today and I’ve already received a number of emails and text messages asking me to support it because I did vote against it and I’ve had time to think about it and knowing what my kids were like I am going to support it today so I don’t know what anyone else is going to vote like so it will be interesting to see,” said Representative Watkins. She is looking forward to a very productive Legislative Session this year.
