The Green River boys basketball team have been taking part in the 1A State Championship Tournament in Richfield since Wednesday. After a second round loss to Tabiona, the Pirates fell into the consolation bracket. Fighting their way through the field they now find themselves one game away from a sixth place state finish.

Below is a recap of their games:

February 26- Tabiona- Loss 58-37

In the second round they faced Tabiona, the No. 8 seed. These two teams faced each other once in the regular season, with Tabiona taking the 75-67 win.

Tabiona came out firing in the first quarter going up 17-5. In the second quarter, the Pirates would keep it closer but was held scoreless until the 2:35 mark and would still be down by 15 headed into the locker room at halftime. After playing even in the third quarter, Tabiona would take over  and come away with the 58-37 win.

Rad Hughes would lead Green River with 12 points. Virg Mendoza would add nine and Weston Hatfield added seven in the loss.

Landon Rhodes led the way for Tabiona with 20 points. Carter Curry added 16 and Kade Stewart scored 14.

February 27- Wayne- Win 62-52

Fourteen hours after losing to Tabiona the Pirates were back on the floor against Wayne, the No. 17 seed.

Not wanting to go home just yet Green River came out very aggressive scoring 29 points in the first half. Wayne, not ready to leave either scored 28 and went to the locker room down by just one. In the second half, the Pirates would pick up the intensity and outscore Wayne 33-24 to take the ten point victory and continue there tournament run.

Rad Hughes had 16 in this one, Sam Corrigan added 13 and Axel Anguiano dropped in 12 .

February 28- Monument Valley- Win 68-53

In their third game in three days Green River faced Monument Valley the No. 13 seed in the tournament, and a team that would not go away.

In the first quarter it looked like the Pirates were going to run away with the game outscoring their opponent 21-13. They would push their lead to 10 points going in at the half. Monument Valley would go on a 9-0 run in the third quarter and would even cut Green River’s lead to four at one point, but down the stretch it was the Pirates free throw shooting (six-of-seven in the fourth quarter) that would put Monument Valley away for good.

Up next Green River will take on Milford the No. 15 seed for sixth place. The game is scheduled for 11:30 Saturday morning.
