The Green River Pirates had the opportunity to do something only four teams in 1A could do, end their season with a win. And even though it took overtime to do it, they accomplished that feat on Saturday defeating Milford 51-42 in the consolation bracket of the 1A State Championship playoffs.

After losing their first round match-up to Tabiona, the Pirates fell to the consolation bracket where they faced Wayne and Monument Valley before the contest for sixth place against Milford.

In the first quarter the Pirates came out scoring 13 points. Moving into the second quarter both teams played even scoring eight point each and Green River took a seven point lead to the locker room. The third quarter was one that they would have rather forgotten as the Pirates scored just two points and let Milford back into the game even taking the lead by one. The fourth quarter and overtime was Green River’s moment and they took full advantage scoring 28 points and sealing the win.

For Milford, Zach Sherwood led the way with 19 points, Trey Rose added 13 and Kolby Gillies scored five.

For the Pirates, junior Rad Hughes had a game high 22 points including six from behind the arc. Senior Axel Anguiano had another strong showing with 10 and seniors Sam Corrigan and Weston Hatfield both added six points each.

That brings to an end the 2019-2020 season. Green River finished 16-9 overall going 5-1 in region play and finishing sixth overall in 1A. They will be losing five players to graduation and when next fall rolls around there will most definitely be some new faces ready to go to work.
