On Friday, March 13, the Utah High School Activities Association announced a suspension of all spring sports activities beginning on Monday, March 16 for a period of at least two weeks due to the ongoing prevent efforts with the COVID-19 Virus.

At the time of the suspension of the season the Spartans held a record of 2-5. They had taken part in a tournament in Mesquite against schools from Nevada and southern Utah. They also hosted games against Payson a team from the 5A classifcation, and 4A Uintah.

March 5:

The Emery Spartan baseball team took to the field for the first time this season in Mesquite as part of the five team Cactus Classic Tournament hosted by Virgin Valley High School.

In their first game on Thursday the Spartans would meet up with Sports Leadership and Management out of Henderson Nevada. After a quiet first two innings, Sports Leadership’s bats would wake up in the top of the third collecting six runs. Scoring again in the fifth and the sixth innings, they would get the victory over Emery 11-1.

Ryker Jensen would start it off on the mound going just over two innings giving up six runs (two earned) on one hit while walking five. Kove Johansen would go three innings giving up five runs (one earned) on five hits while walking two.

On the offensive side, Oakley Alton scored the only run in the bottom of the fifth inning, he also registered one hit along with Teagan Christman. Jace Mangum would also add a hit on a day when offense was difficult for Emery to find.

March 6:

Looking to rebound from Thursday’s loss, the Spartans slipped into an immediate 2-0 by the end of the first inning. Moapa Valley added runs in four of the next five innings to end the game following the sixth. Moapa Valley would go on to win the contest 14-2.

March 6:

The Emery Spartans earned their first victory of the season by topping Virgin Valley 6-1 Friday afternoon in Mesquite, Nevada.

Junior Luke Stilson threw a gem for the Spartans, allowing just one hit, while striking out three in a complete game effort. The Emery defense allowed just four base runners in the five inning contest.

Senior Bron Gordon continued his consistent play at the plate ending 1-2 with a single, two RBIs and a walk. Sophomores Oakley Alton and Ryker Jensen each hit in one run as the Spartans finished with an early season best six runs.

March 7:

The Emery Spartans concluded a four-game in three-day stint with an 8-1 loss to Virgin Valley Saturday morning in Mesquite, Nevada.

Offensively the Spartans recorded just one hit as sophomore Ryker Jensen reached safely on a single. Jensen would later cross home plate, as he also reached the bases after being hit by a pitch.

Alton and senior Bron Gordon both worked the mound for the Spartans in the weekend finale. Combining for six strike outs (three a piece), the allowed just three earned runs.

March 10:

Unfazed by a slow start, the Emery Spartans scored six runs in the final three innings to sneak past the North Sanpete Hawks 6-5 Tuesday afternoon in Castle Dale.

Led sophomore Jace Mangum at the plate, the Spartans tallied 12 hits and six RBIs in the team’s most potent offensive performance of the season. As a team Emery accumulated two extra base hits.

Mangum finished 2-3 at the dish with two singles, two RBIs and one run. Four other players gathered one RBI, including junior Luke Stilson who ended 2-3 with one double and one run.

Sophomore Trevin Wakefield pitched six full innings, allowing 11 hits and three earned runs while fanning six batters. Kove Johansen pitched the final frame giving up just one hit.

March 11:

The Spartans welcomed 5A Payson to Castle Dale on Wednesday. Unable to summon any offense they fell 14-1 in five innings.

Brax Jensen registered one hit and and the lone run for Emery in the contest.

Luke Stilson took the loss on the mound, going two innings giving up 10 runs, all earned on 10 hits while striking out two and also walking two. Tyler Stilson also went two inning, surrendering eight hits and four runs (all earned) while striking out two.

March 12:

The Emery Spartans wrapped up a three-game homestand with an 11-0 loss to the Uintah Utes Thursday afternoon in Castle Dale.

Offensively the Spartans struggled at the plate as the team was held to just two hits throughout the contest. Juniors Luke Stilson and Jax Madsen each finished 1-3 at the plate, both registering singles.

Sophomore Oakley Alton was charged with the loss on the bump as he threw two complete innings, allowing six hits and five earned runs, while striking out one. Bron Gordon threw two innings giving up three hits, while Kove Johansen surrendered one earned run in one frame of relief work.
