The Green River Pirates wrapped up the 1A baseball season on Oct. 5 after suffering a loss to Panguitch in the second round of the 1A State Championship Tournament.

Finishing the regular season 5-13, the Pirates earned a 12-2 win over Bryce Valley to open the tournament. Below is a complete recap of each game in the 2019 season, plus the hitting and pitching leaders:

August 14- Wayne- Loss 11-1:

The Green River Pirates opened up the season at home, putting up the first run of the game against the Wayne Badgers. Only down four runs headed into the fifth the Badgers would unleash their offense scoring five runs in the inning and putting the Pirates away 11-1.

Sam Corrigan would have the only run in the contest for Green River. Weston Hatfield-Knight added two hits, and the trio of Axel Anguiano, Cord Pfander and Gavin Anderson would each add one hit a piece.

August 16- Tintic- Loss 2-1 1A Preview- Eureka:

In the second game of the season the Green River Pirates would take part in the 1A Preview in Eureka. Facing Tintic, the Pirates would fall to 0-2 on the young season, losing 2-1.

Virg Mendoza would add 1 hit and the only run in the game for Green River. Sam Corrigan also added a hit.

August 17- Piute- Loss 11-2 1A Preview- Eureka:

Still looking for that first win of the season, The Green River Pirates faced Piute in the third game of the season and it was not ,meant to be as the Thunderbirds scored 10 runs in the first three innings and ended this game in the fifth 11-2.

Cord Pfander collected two hits and added one run, Virg Mendoza added one hit and the only other run of the game. Weston Hatfield-Knight and Sam Corrigan each added a hit as well.

Preston Marshall went 4 innings giving up 12 hits and 11 runs (nine earned) while walking three.

August 17- Diamond Ranch Academy- Loss 2-1 1A Preview- Eureka

In the final game of the weekend Green River would face Diamond Ranch Academy from Hurricane. The Pirates kept the game close but were unable to close out the Diamondbacks falling 2-1.

Sam Corrigan started on the mound for the Pirates going four innings surrendering four hits and two earned runs while walking one and striking out one.

Corrigan also helped his own cause offensively scoring the only run in the game for Green River.Virg Mendoza added two hits and Preston Marshall collected an RBI.

August 21-Pinnacle- Win 7-2:

Unable to hold a small middle inning lead, the Pinnacle Panthers came up short in a 7-2 loss to the Green River Pirates Wednesday afternoon at Carlson-Colosimo Field in Price.

Green River senior Axel Anguiano recorded the win on the mound, striking out five batters, while allowing two earned runs in 5.1 innings of work. Sam Corrigan finished off the final five outs in a relief effort, giving up just one hit.

Anguiano helped his own cause at the plate, finishing 2-4 with two RBIs in the box. Fellow senior Preston Marshall ended 3-4 with one triple and two RBIs. Cord Pfander finished with three hits as the Pirates ended with 14 total.

August 23- Diamond Ranch Academy- Loss 8-2:

Fresh off their first win of the season, the Green River Pirates welcomed the Diamond Ranch Academy Diamondbacks to town. The Pirates held them scoreless through two innings but scoring a flurry of runs in the third and fourth, the Diamondbacks would take the win 8-2.

Cord Pfander would get the Pirates on the board with two hits and two RBI’s. Virg Mendoza added two hits and scored one run as well.

Sam Corrigan takes the loss on the mound going three innings and giving up nine hits and seven runs while striking out two and walking one.

August 28- Valley- Loss 19-2:

The Pirates have been struggling of late losing five of the first six games this season. A road trip to Orderville to take on Valley would not get them in the win column falling 19-2 in five innings.

Using three pitchers in this game Axel Anguiano would take the brunt of the Valley bats giving up 10 earned runs on 11 hits, Valley would score 18 runs in the first three innings.

Anguiano and Rad Hughes scored the only two runs in the game for Green River, who now falls to 1-6 on the season.

August 30- Bryce Valley- Win 7-1:

The Pirates put it all together in their game against Bryce Valley winning 7-1 at home.

The game would start out quietly and then in the third inning Green River found their bats, Weston Hatfield-Knight and Rad Hughes would each gather up three hits, with Hughes knocking in two runs and Hatfield-Knight one. Cord Pfander not to be out done found the parking lot with his first home run of the season which also brought in two run.

With all the run support it was a easy day for Preston Marshall, who went six innings giving up seven hits but only one earned run, striking out six and walking one.

September 4- Panguitch- Loss 5-3:

The Pirates traveled to Panguitch to take on the Bobcats, and even though they would jump out to an early lead, Green River made it interesting with their rally falling just two runs short as they fall 5-3.

The Bobcats would take the early five run lead after the second inning, the Pirates made a run in the third but after scoring three runs, Panguitch would shut them down to preserve the victory.

Virg Mendoza, Rad Hughes and Gavin Anderson would cross the plate for the Pirates. Weston Hatfield-Knight would log two hits and two RBI.

On the mound Sam Corrigan would start on the mound for the Pirates, going 1 2/3 innings giving up five earned runs on four hits.

September 6- Piute- Loss 8-2:

Meeting up for the second time this season the Piute Thunderbirds came to town, the first meeting between the two teams was at the 1A Preview where Green River fell 11-2. Shutout in the first two innings Piute would score eight runs on 12 hits sending the Pirates to their eighth loss on the season.

Virg Mendoza would collect three hits and one run on a day when runs for Green River were at a premium. Cord Pfander would give the Pirates their other run for the game.

Sam Corrigan started the game giving up four runs all earned on seven hits while striking out one and walking one. Preston Marshall came in and gave up four earned runs on five hits while strking out three and walking two.

September 7- Tabiona- Win 12-2:

The Green River Pirates propelled by an eight run first inning put the breaks on a two game losing streak and collected their second win of the year against Tabiona at home.

The Pirates found their bats as they registered 13 hits cranking out 12 runs. Rad Hughes had three hits and three RBI, Gavin Anderson added one hit with two runs as did Weston Hatfield-Knight.

Axel Anguiano needed just 64 pitches giving up five hits and two earned runs while striking out three and walking one.

September 11- Wayne- Loss 13-3:

Another slow start would doom the Pirates as they were on the road in Bicknell to take on the Wayne Badgers. Giving up eight runs in the first inning Green River could never overcome the deficit and fall 13-3 in five innings.

Weston Hatfield-Knight had two hits and two RBI, while Cord Pfander and and Rad Hughes both collected two hits and two runs.

Axel Anguiano would start on the mound giving up six earned runs on nine hits, striking out one while walking two. Preston Marshall would give up five earned runs on three hits and walking two.

September 13- Pinnacle- Win 13-3:

Scoring 11 runs in the first three innings Green River jumped out and walked away with a 10 run win against rival Pinnacle at home 13-3.

The trio of Weston Hatfield-Knight, Gavin Anderson and Sam Corrigan each collect three hits as part of an 18 hit game. Hatfield-Knight added three RBI and Anderson and Axel Anguiano each added two.

Corrigan started on the mound going three innings and giving up three earned runs on seven hits while striking out two. Preston Marshall came in and finished out giving up three hits and striking out five.

September 18- Diamond Ranch Academy- Loss 10-0:

The Green River Pirate baseball team had won three of their last six games and were hoping for another win coming off of a victory over Pinnacle. Unfortunately Diamond Ranch Academy had a different thought, as the Pirates would fall 10-0 on the road.

The Pirates (4-10 overall and 3-6 in region) had no answer for Diamond Ranch (12-4, 7-2) who is currently #2 in the most recent RPI rankings statewide. With only four games left the Pirates are sitting at #10, with the playoffs set to begin October 4.

At the plate the Pirates were able to collect four hits from juniors Peyton Romero and Rad Hughes, sophomore Gavin Anderson and senior Axel Anguiano.

On the mound senior Sam Corrigan went four innings giving up six hits, two runs both earned while walking one and one strike out. Senior Preston Marshall would go one inning surrendering five hits and seven runs all earned and Anguiano would go just over one inning with four hits and one earned run.

September 20- Valley- Loss 10-6:

The Green River Pirates welcomed the Valley Buffaloes on, and the result wasn’t what the Pirate faithful were looking for,  a 10-6 loss. The Pirates are sitting at 4-11 overall and 3-7 in Region 12 play with just three games left on the schedule.

The next three games against Bryce Valley, Panguitch and Piute are all on the road to close out the season. The playoffs are set to begin on October 4.

The Pirates had plenty of offense in this one as nine different players had hits. Senior Weston Hatfield-Knight registered a double with one run and two RBI’s. Sophomores Jay Mendez and Gavin Anderson also had doubles and both had one RBI each.

On the mound for the Pirates Senior Axel Anguiano went five innings giving up 12 hits, five earned runs and struck out four. Senior Preston Marshall went one inning giving up one hit, while walking two and striking out one and senior Sam Corrigan gave up seven hits, five runs (four earned) and striking out one in an innings work.

September 25- Bryce Valley- Win 20-16:

The Pirates baseball team, coming off of back-to-back losses in which they scored a combined six runs. In the game against the Bryce Valley Mustangs they would more than triple their offensive output winning 20-16.

In the month of September the Pirates have gone 3-5, with the season ending we will have to wait until then to see the latest RPI standings.

With their highest run total all season it was definitely a team effort with eight players scoring at least one run. Senior Weston Hatfield-Knight led the way with four runs on four hits and seven RBI’s. Senior Axel Anguiano added one run on three hits and four RBI’s and seniors Preston Marshall and Sam Corrigan each contributed two RBI’s a piece with Corrigan going yard with one home run. Junior Rad Hughes also had two hits with three RBI’s.

On the mound Corrigan went three innings giving up eight hits, six runs (three earned) while walking two and striking out two as well. Marshall goes two innings giving up eight earned runs on 10 hits walking one and striking out two and Anguiano gave them two innings of work surrendering four hits, two earned runs and striking out one.

September 27- Panguitch- Loss 9-4:

The Green River Pirate baseball squad fell to Panguitch 9-4 in a region clash. Panguitch sits at 11-8 overall and 8-4 in conference play.

The Pirates (5-12 and 4-8) have now lost three of their last five headed in to the final game of the season against Piute.

Senior Weston Hatfield-Knight would lead the way with one run, one hit and one RBI. Junior Rad Hughes would have one hit and a run while senior Preston Marshall added one run and three hits of his own. Junior Payton Romero gave the Pirates one run and one hit and sophomore Jay Mendez would contribute with one run.

On the mound senior Axel Anguiano went five innings allowing nine hits, five earned runs and walking two. Senior Sam Corrigan would go two innings giving up seven hits, four runs (three earned).

October 2- Piute- Loss 12-5:

The Green River Pirate baseball team have had an up and down 2019 campaign. They have gone 5-13 overall, winning one of their last three. So when they took on Piute in Junction, a 12-5 loss is probably not what they were looking for.

Piute jumped out early and never looked back. Scoring seven runs in the first, the Thunderbirds took the Pirates out of the game early.

Senior Axel Anguiano led the team with one run, two hits and two RBI’s. Senior Virgilio Mendoza and junior Payton Romero would add one run, one hit and one RBI each.

A trio of seniors would handle the mound for Green River. Sam Corrigan would go two innings giving up seven hits, seven earned runs with one walk and one strike. Preston Marshall gave them three innings of work surrendering seven hits, five earned runs while giving up one walk and striking out one, Anguiano would also go one inning giving up one hit.

October 4- Bryce Valley- Win 12-2:

In game one of the playoffs the Pirates faced Bryce Valley. The game was relatively quiet with Green River scoring three runs in the third inning. The offensive explosion happen in the fourth when the Pirates would rack up nine runs putting the game away.

Senior Weston Hatfield-Knight would end the game with one run, one hit and two RBI’s, senior Sam Corrigan would add two runs, one hit and two RBI’s. Junior Payton Romero had one run with two hits and two RBI’s. And junior Rad Hughes added two runs , one hit and one RBI in the win.

Senior Preston Marshall would get the win on the mound, going all five innings giving up five hits, two earned runs and striking out two.

October 5- Panguitch- Loss 7-2:

In the second game of the tournament, Panguitch was very consistent scoring in every inning but one. Green River couldn’t find much offense in this game striking out 11 times and leaving eight men on base.

Weston Hatfield-Knight would have one RBI in the game on one hit, while junior Rad Hughes registered one run on two hits and senior Cord Pfander collected a run, a hit and an RBI in the loss.

Two seniors would end their season on the mound for Green River. Sam Corrigan went one inning giving up one hit and one run and Axel Anguiano would go five surrendering 13 hits, six runs (four earned) and striking out two.

Green River finished the season 6-14 overall and 4-9 in region play.
