Bill Evans was formally introduced as the new USU Eastern men’s basketball coach Monday afternoon at a press conference on campus inside the BDAC.

“I’m new to junior college basketball, but I’m not new to basketball,” said Evans in his first comments since accepting the job. “My philosophy is pretty simple. I’m going to bring in good guys and try to develop a relationship with them. We’re going to win some games and we’re going to graduate guys. It’s a pretty easy philosophy.”

Introduced by Associate Vice President Greg Dart, Evans answered questions in front of a handful of people, including his wife and youngest son. The press conference streamed live on the USU Eastern Athletics Facebook page.

A familiar name in the college coaching ranks, Evans is the all-time winningest coach in Southern Utah University history. He did not coach last season following seven years with Idaho State University. Evans to went ISU following 16 seasons of leading SUU, including one trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2001, three conference tournament championships and one regular season conference championship.

“I wanted to coach again very badly, but I was a little bit selective,” Evans said when asked what intrigued him about USU Eastern. “I wanted to be able to coach in an area that I was familiar and comfortable with. Certainly I spent a lot of time in Utah and Idaho, so I was familiar with USU Eastern and it’s tradition.”

On top of 23 seasons as a Division I college basketball coach, Evans has also served as an assistant at Alaska Anchorage and Montana. As a head coach he as accumulated a record of 278-364.

“Was I successful at Southern Utah and Idaho State? We went to the NCAA Tournament one time. We won about 300 games, but lost more than 300 games,” said Evans. “I’ve always recruited good guys. I hope I’ve impacted their lives. Those are things that I count as success. I’m not going to win every game at USU Eastern, but I can tell you we are going to have good people here. We’re going to graduate and do things the right way that this area is going to be proud of.”
