Castle Country Radio was able to sit down and speak over the telephone with Principal Roberta Hardy about how the school was able to take off without a hiccup when it came time for the statewide school closure in March.

“We have a number of our staff, myself included who are married to people in the medical profession and we started watching what was coming out of WHO and we said well we need to get prepared. So, all of our teachers did at least six weeks of lessons, they made packets for elementary, our secondary teachers put everything on whatever platform they were using, google classroom,” explained Principal Hardy. The unique thing about this school is they are a technology charter school so most of the students had already been accessing their school instruction via online.

The school has been doing it’s best since the closure to remain in close contact with their students on a daily basis. “As far as the launch goes, it was messy but it worked and so far, so good. We’re doing Zoom Meetings, we’re talking to students individually, we have aides that are have been assigned 15 kids and they call every single day to make sure they’re working.  So as far as trying to deliver an education, we are definitely giving it our best shot at this point,” stated Principal Hardy. The school administration appreciates all the hard work students have been putting into their studies.

“This week they’re going to be wrapping up all of their assignments, going in and looking on SIS, figuring out what they have left and then the last week of school we’ll be doing online pet shows, we’ll do our talent show, we’ll do our awards assembly, we’re not going to not do those things that we normally do that last week of school,” said Principal Hardy. Trying to keep some normalcy in the student’s lives is important to the school’s administration.

As far as the school’s high school graduation ceremony they will plan an event to recognize the 2020 high school seniors in August. “We are looking at, if at all possible, we’re going to obviously do what we’re told to do, but if at all possible, we’ll have a senior prom, we’ll do the senior tea and we’ll have a graduation ceremony. We do not want to short change those students, they’ve worked so hard to get to where they are,” said Principal Hardy. Further details on these events will come at a later time.
