Off-season workouts for the Emery High School boy’s basketball program are officially underway and will continue throughout the next two weeks with open gyms and two traveling team camps.

Entering year one under head coach Jeff Cisneros, the Spartans are finally allowed to get acquainted with their new head coach. Workouts started Tuesday evening, continued Wednesday morning and will take place again Thursday.

“We’ve been sitting on our thumbs for two or three months and haven’t been able to do a whole lot,” said Cisneros. “It’s exciting to meet with the boys, get introduced to them and get going on some stuff for the summer.”

Still dealing with several restrictions, the Utah High School Activities Association has set strict guidelines that must be followed. The coaching staff will enforce the restrictions that include healthy participants only, monitoring player temperatures, cleaning the basketballs that are used and more.

Due to COVID-19, the summer schedule will look completely different for all schools throughout the state. Emery will however have the ability to participate in two team camps in two weeks.

First, the squad will travel to Enterprise for a Friday and Saturday camp. Emery will then travel to Manti on June 5 and 6 for another team camp. Restrictions prohibit spectators and other teams from watching games in the stands.

“We want to get some drill work Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. I don’t want to jam a lot down their throats in a short period of time,” said Cisneros. “They do a lot of great things already and I just want to build on those things. I’m not going to reinvent the wheel with this group, especially with the short period of time we have.”

These workouts will also serve as an opportunity for the team to meet their new coaching staff. Cisneros recently announce that Dakota Cisneros will serve as the junior varsity coach, while Todd Huntington will handle the sophomore team. Chase Julian will serve as an assistant coach, working with the freshman team during their scheduled games.

“Expectations are going to be high. We don’t have the chance to go to five or six summer camps, so it’s going to be challenging,” Cisneros said. “We just need to make the best of our summer that we do have.”
